New Netherland—now New York
- 1609: Henry Hudson is sent by the VOC (Dutch East India Company) to find a northwest passage
- 1614: patents are issued by the Dutch States General for the private settlement of Nieu Nederland
- 1614–1617: Fort Nassau is built far up the Hudson River
- 1618: Fort Nassau is destroyed by flood
- 1624: Fort Nassau is resettled as Fort Orange, in Beverwijck (Albany).  New Netherland becomes a province of the Dutch Republic; the first colonists arrive on Noten Island.
