• 1625: New Amsterdam is founded on the Island of Manhattan
• 1655: the Dutch absorb New Sweden; New Netherland reaches its largest extent
• 1664: the English occupy New Amsterdam, rename it New York
• 1667: the colony is ceded to the English in the Treaty of Breda
